I rented a Litespeed titanium bicycle from West Maui Cycling (www.gocyclingmaui.com) and joined 7 other riders to ascend the Haleakala Crater, a dormant volcano. This ride starts at sea level and the ascent begins immediately. My legs felt strong and the tempo was just right (photo 1) for settling in and conversing while climbing. Shop owner, Donnie Arnault (photo 2 on right), advised going slower than you normally would, because above 9000', you will wish you had. I took his recommendation seriously knowing he does this ride 50 TIMES a year. The temp at the start was 75 and humid, very Hawaiian! At the first stop 1-1/2 hours in and 3250', I could tell the quads had been working, but I gotta tell you, I was so jazzed to be riding up this fabled climb with an ex-pro racer. If you are into this sport, I don't need to explain the euphoria you feel riding a new road with spectacular scenery filling your senses. As we continued to the top, I caught glimpses of Maui's beautiful beaches below, hangglider's and paraglider's overhead, low-growing trees forming a canopy above and the open grasslands over 4500'. Donnie gave me pointers on racing tactics while I bragged about my family. The second rest stop (photo 3) came at 3 hours and 6500' where the temp was around 50. GoCyclingMaui gave me arm and knee warmers, a light jacket, food, water and endurolytes to get me to the top and back...commercial tours are not allowed above this elevation. For the next hour plus, a strong climber from Westlake Village, CA and I ascended together until I begin feeling light-headed at 8500'. I didn't want to sacrifice the summit to ego and fail to make it entirely, so I turned him loose and away he went. Greg has done this before and I was slowing him down. At around 9500', I knew I was going to make it, but the last 300' were a 10-12% gradient and it was tough! In my lowest gear and standing I could barely tick the pedals over, but I am no quitter. Keep going, KEEP GOING...I'm there! 10,023' above sea level (photo 4). WOW!

The summit offers amazing views of the crater, cinder cones, other islands, beautiful colors of water and I could go on. The best thing to do is come see for yourself. And ride a bike if you can.

As it pertains to mileage, I am only halfway. But descending this volcano has to be the best cycling experience possible. For 35 miles, you are going downhill! And if you want to rip along at 50mph, go ahead. The pavement is great, you can clearly see cars ascending the road because of the switchbacks and the hairpin 15mph turns are gravel free, offering a smooth line to carry your speed through the apex. Very few cars were in our way...I mean slowing us down. I love blowing by cars given the opportunity. As we got lower, the temp climbed and I was peeling off the arm warmers, gloves and jacket while going 30. In about an hour, Greg and I were at sea level again. 70 miles and I was stoked! Yeah, it was tough, but so rewarding. Do you ever look at a mountain (or volcano) and wonder if you can make it to the top? Stop wondering and GO FIND OUT!

The Good 'Ol Days!

Even three weeks after completing our goal, I am daily remembering something about our journey. It may be hearing something in the news about a town we went through, seeing a small airplane or hearing a stream nearby. But, every memory is a good one. Somehow the cold days, the exhaustion or the noisy traffic are long forgotten and are replaced with the sense of freedom that only cycling brings me. What I don't understand is this: Why do people live as though they will never die and die as though they never lived?

If I could pick three days to ride over out of our 18 stages, they would be the section from Hermiston to Spray, Spray to John Day and John Day to Riley. You will not find more secluded and beautiful roads to explore. From forests and 4500' summits to unique geology and clear streams to entertain your senses, this is bicycling at its best. The towns are interspersed at convenient intervals and the drivers go out of there way to give a wide berth...unlike Medford.

The thought I keep ruminating on is how day after day I just rode my bicycle, in the moment (I have been living 'in the moment' even when it wasn't cool). On the last day, perhaps 10 miles from the border, I began to realize, "I really am going to do this". After arriving at the finish, it sank in that this is over. Wow! 18 days, 1577.3 miles, 7 days of 100 miles or more and 3 of 97 miles, so let's just round it to 10 centuries. For weeks I just pedaled not understanding how I was chipping away at a larger goal...and that's how life is. We go through seasons of prosperity or drought, but we just keep chipping away at it, one day at a time. I am so glad that GOD is a part of my life's journey.

Random photos, part dos

<img src='http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/TAxiSTdcOPI/AAAAAAAAAp4/HbUf1BmNe9c/s400/P1000279.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/TAxiS-3mY9I/AAAAAAAAAqA/kUN3-083sjM/s400/P1000371.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/TAxiTpvgOcI/AAAAAAAAAqI/8ZPNPoxp-qw/s400/P1000513.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/TAxiT0WEa5I/AAAAAAAAAqQ/YU_rag39Hdc/s400/P1000595.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />

Photo 1: Karen with some scoundrel
Photo 2: Griffin with Sandy dog. Before leaving for THE RIDE, I was inspired by the life of Patrick Tillman. I read "Where Men Win Glory", by one of my favorite authors Jon Krakauer and a book written by Mary Tillman, Pat's mother. While I disagree with their political analysis of world events at that time, Krakauer's depiction of Tillman's life was inspiring. Pat knew how to squeeze the most out of his short life and had a strong commitment to our country, so much so that he abandoned the NFL to serve in the Army Rangers. He wanted to be treated the same as every other soldier, even though he had amassed impressive credentials before enlisting. He died a tragic death from 'friendly fire'...he is a hero in my eyes.

This morning I rode up to the Veterans Cemetery, as I do every Memorial Day, to visit my father-in-law. He served in the Air Force during WWII and like so many of his generation, married in the 1940's, started a family and built a life. His youngest daughter is my wonderful wife. Elmer, thank you for serving this blessed nation. You were an honorable man.

I urge you to read about the founding of this great nation, turn off your TV and educate yourself about the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Federalist writings. You will then begin to understand freedom, the price it cost and how much of it has eroded. Today especially, I want to thank the soldiers who died in defense of our country. Thank you.

Icing On The Cake

<img src='http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S_3Ox6BgZ0I/AAAAAAAAAoA/X-m6QkR5618/s400/IMG_3435.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S_3OyTzd5RI/AAAAAAAAAoI/0js7NKgvcxM/s400/IMG_3440.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S_3OygXdiZI/AAAAAAAAAoQ/uCssEALmOCE/s400/IMG_3450.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S_3OzORYOXI/AAAAAAAAAoY/tHKsHL1-kDc/s400/IMG_3427.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />

After finishing at the border, we dropped Tim off in San Diego and Rich drove south to visit his cousin in Oceanside. My family plus Ron went to downtown L.A. to watch stage 7, the individual time trial, at the Tour Of California. This was a great way to wrap up our personal tour of California...and Washington and Oregon. The yellow jersey wearer, Michael Rogers, was the eventual winner. Afterward, we drove away from the mayhem that is Southern California and camped in a rest stop parking lot near Bakersfield. We arrived in Medford Sunday night and were glad to be home.

For three weeks I didn't watch TV or listen to the radio. I didn't hear Obama is fixing everything or that he is ruining everything (not so easy to fix that pesky oil spill in the Gulf, is it? Too much bureaucracy). I talked to perfect strangers and saw people, good hard-working people, who live their lives without caring what goes on in Washington D.C. and it was refreshing. I think a man or woman is more successful the less they look to self-serving politicians. I plan on ignoring them as much as possible (of course I will still vote).

This RIDE was everything I expected and more. I knew it would be difficult due to weather and the daily expectation of riding 100 miles. I had one friend who told me it was impossible to take the route we planned in May...but we did. There was not one day where I didn't want to try. There was not one day I wanted to throw my bicycle in the garbage. And even now I wish I could have kept riding to Florida or Maine. Before I started, I wondered if I could actually do this and I learned that I could.

This experience revealed and reinforced some important things for me. It was very cleansing to see the creation roll by at 15-20mph. You hear the snow melt roaring by in a stream. You feel and hear the wind. Your own muscles propel you down the road. You smell the airborne scents from the forests to the ocean. This is how I know I'm alive! The simplicity of it all was therapeutic. Would I do it again? In a heartbeat...even that Monday we were sandblasted or the Wednesday in the snow. What's your dream? What are you waiting for? You are never too old to try....

Good Times, Bad Times, You Know I've Had My Share...

Leaving Newport Beach, the four of us are all smiles knowing we have one final day. Heading south on the Pacific Coast Highway we admire the most beautiful scenes of our trip. The lanes are marked for cyclists, the pavement is good, the beach towns are unique (unlike the Costco/ Starbucks/ etc. model you see all over here), the ocean views and the affluence all made for this finale to be satisfying. We met up with Edgar & Pat, friends of Ron, in Dana Point and while riding through San Onofre State Park, Ron made a U-turn right in front of a BMW...one second later, he would have a bumper tattoo or worse. Praying each day before leaving paid off.

Our route took us through Camp Pendleton where you see signs such as 'TANK CROSSING' or 'ARTILLERY RANGE 127'. A large group of soldiers were training as we rolled by. Leaving this area, the ride continues through the beach towns of Oceanside, Carlsbad, Leucadia, Encinitas and more. This is the BEST place to ride, the best. So much so, a cousin of Rich's flew down from Vancouver BC with three friends to ride in and around San Diego for a week. Their trip overlapped with ours and we hung out briefly in Cardiff-By-The-Sea to share stories and refuel. Griffin and I played in the ocean and the water felt great. If I were you, I'd make plans to go to Encinitas...nice size, great shops and restaurants, and excellent beaches.

Well, Ron reminded us we had to get back to work, so we said goodbye to everyone and the four of us rode through Torrey Pines and LaJolla. Just beautiful! It is now afternoon and traffic is picking up. This poor guy in a white Ferrari had to weave around potholes, but we rolled up behind him at a stoplight to admire the V-12 and hear the music when the light turned green...couldn't keep up with him though. Nearing San Diego, my bladder was about to burst and I spotted a guy moving. Yeah, I asked him if I could use his bathroom. He said, "Anything for a fellow cyclist"; boy was I lucky. At Mission Beach, I chatted with Thomas, a homeless guy, and he rides 20 miles a day. Coming into San Diego, our fortunes changed and things got tense...narrow expressways, cyclists and Friday @ 4:00 is not a good combination. We picked our way south and in the barrio, learned we couldn't proceed on our intended route. But, we got great assistance and directions from the locals...I'd like to thank them. The last 15 miles were difficult for me but at one point, I began to realize I was seeing Mexico. With a tear in my eye, I could see the border fence and U.S. Border Patrol vehicles (they see you long before you see them). The four of us rode 107 miles today and finished the journey together. 1577.3 miles total. WOW!!!!!!!!!

I will post more photos and wrap this blog up in the days to come. Riding in this L.A./ Orange County basin is not as horrid as I expected. We safely navigated through four cities on boulevards, some with bike lanes, and saw industrial complexes, cow pastures and everything in between. About 30 miles later, we connected to a bike path in Corona that follows the Santa Ana 'river' which is really an aqueduct for storm runoff. Coming into the city of Orange, I could see the 'A' in front of Angel stadium. Ron took us down memory lane for a lunchstop at Poncho's Burrito's and it was delicious...someday I'm going back. He guided us through the town and this is another place to visit when in the area...but do it on foot.

In the first photo, I am exhausted and Tim looks perky...but I recovered in a matter of seconds. The bike path along the river is an excellent way to travel in this area; no lights, no traffic and it's long (40 miles). It runs out at Highway 1, the Pacific Coast Highway, in the posh town of Newport Beach. Just beautiful! And yes, the residents have more than their fair share of snobbery, but let's face it, you can find that anywhere. I loved the setting, the homes, the shops, the cars (Ferrari dealer nearby) and more. Coming back here too. 67 miles on the day. We are on track to finish Friday.

At 1:15 A.M. a mystery man slunk into the trailer...Rich is BACK!

You Can Taste the Air!

<img src='http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S_S-rFwCILI/AAAAAAAAAko/6EH5INA_llw/s400/P1010190.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S_S-rqDYZzI/AAAAAAAAAkw/GIxqd5Hsj9w/s400/P1010195.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S_S-r3qJwdI/AAAAAAAAAk4/1BPHeMxzpKU/s400/P1010210.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S_S-sYgCbVI/AAAAAAAAAlA/3QinraxVcEA/s400/P1010214.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />

Today was interesting. Ron, Tim & I left California City around 7:30 and headed toward Mojave. Yesterday and today have been the first days I have really perspired in the 16 days of THE RIDE. The temp was perhaps 88 and I understand it could easily be 100, so we got through the desert quite well sans the windy day on Monday. Passing through Mojave, a train was heading East like us and going 25. Ron revved it up and we actually passed it and continued pulling away. We're working on posting it on YouTube and I'll provide a link for you. Ron thinks it's the coolest thing ever and my wife wonders if anyone will care. You decide. But I think it was so motivating to start a long day with some serious speed.

Our first break was in Lancaster at Starbucks (sorry Lance) where Tim temporarily withdrew. Ron & I found a nice bike path in Palmdale that got us off a busy highway and I photo'd a lone fishing boat in the weeds. I don't know the significance of it, but it's my blog and you're reading it. It wasn't long and we were heading east up a gentle grade with a strong tailwind and we were cruising 18-20mph climbing to 4300' where we actually got to ride the descent that Friday's stage of the Tour of California will be ripping down. I finally busted 50 on this trip...51.7mph (not my fastest since I've been riding) and I'll bet the pro racers will exceed 65. I wish could be there to see that. Tim joined us at the 15 & 138 to descend into Fontana and we quickly realized we were on historic Route 66! The road surface was sure historic.

Because we couldn't ride on the freeway, we meandered to the city on backroads and I don't know what Ron said to the llama, but he was spitting mad. Tim accumulated 71 miles and Ron & I racked up 124.I knew it was going to be like this... the air tastes dirty.

What a Difference a Day Makes

<img src='http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S_NIQ9c608I/AAAAAAAAAkI/zL1mzD8d-Gs/s400/P1010154.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S_NIRdKu2GI/AAAAAAAAAkQ/fCxEoTrjDNg/s400/P1010161.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S_NIR0W4ldI/AAAAAAAAAkY/rk6MM8KKeV8/s400/P1010172.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S_NISAXjbUI/AAAAAAAAAkg/2BLmfEssK_w/s400/P1010181.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />

After the debacle of yesterday, we decided to get an earlier start to beat the winds. At 7:00, Ron & I left under calm, sunny conditions and promptly cranked it up to 22mph. As per Dr. Ron Laverty's instructions, Tim left ahead of us to begin physical therapy on his knee. It took us around 12 miles to reel him in and he put in 25 successful miles at a brisk pace, furthering his hope to ride as much of these last 3 stages as possible.

At the 52 mile break, we had an average speed of just over 20mph, even with a slighly increasing headwind. There isn't much to report about the terrain, because it is mile after mile of desert. We were awestruck by the geologic formations in Red Rock Canyon (photo 3), but then it was quickly back to flat desert. I began to fade after 85 miles, but when I took this picture of Ron, he looks as spry as ever. If you ever want to bicycle across the country, here is a tip. Hire this guy...he is like a sherpa for mountaineers. He loves riding, he works hard and he encourages you along the way that you can make it.

We are camping in a forgotten RV park by the California City Airport. Average speed for the day was 17.9mph with a crosswind for a total of 106 miles and I am tired. But we are dropping into the L.A. gnarliness tomorrow and on track to finish Friday night. I think I might be able to do this...after yesterday, I wasn't so sure.

High Winds + iPod= Bad Karaoke

What a crazy ride today! We left around 9:00 wearing just a jersey and shorts with a 15mph headwind and within 10 miles, I was frustrated with our progress(or lack thereof). I watched our average speed steadily drop from 15mph to 11.8 over the course of almost five hours of riding and once again, Ron must have rode at the front 90% of the time, but 'drafting' in these conditions is nearly futile. By the time we rolled into camp, the winds were 30mph with gusts over 45. It was not the worst day I've had cycling, but it was the toughest 55 miles Ron & I have ever ridden for sure.

Now I do NOT advocate this, but we took our iPods after the first break because of the howling winds. Even with the volume maxed out, I could still hear that awful sound over The Who. I started singing the lyrics I knew and it probably sounded horrible, but it made the ride more tolerable.

Leaving Independence, Ron & I found out what sandblasting feels like. Grinding along at 8mph in a 39x25 gear, we could see a cloud of grit and dust coming right at us and within seconds I couldn't breathe or see Ron so I stopped until it passed. He asked if we should turn around rather than put ourselves in peril, but I was more determined than ever to just go 15 more miles to Lone Pine. The construction zone turned out to be a huge benefit in that we had a whole partitioned lane to ourselves. Man, that sand in the face still hurts as I'm writing this.

A big thank you is in order to Russ & Rene Rickert. We are camping in Boulders RV park and it is everything you said it would be. The hot tub repaired some of my aching body. Jim Wright and company, can you pray for us over the next 2 days through the desrt? I am not sure I can take another day of these winds.

Not Really Downhill Afterall

<img src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S_GsEThtWJI/AAAAAAAAAio/JFqZgN7WLzA/s400/P1010112.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;' />
<img src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S_GsE6KLkKI/AAAAAAAAAiw/S58BI0VJHSw/s400/P1010114.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;' />
<img src='http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S_GsFVtks4I/AAAAAAAAAi4/WI4D-TgumJE/s400/P1010124.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;' />
<img src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S_GsFlA8j4I/AAAAAAAAAjA/d8K9xVsXCo0/s400/P1010131.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;' />

We camped last night at the base of Tioga Pass, the north entrance to Yosemite. Just a beautiful setting with a creek roaring from snowmelt. Ron & I rolled out at 7000' and promptly were ascending again, this time to the last pass over 8000'. It's kind of a tough way to start the day, but you just do it. As you can see from the photos lately, the landscape is majestic and a great place to ride. Now, I'm not gonna lie to you, it was hard work, but rewarding all the same.

We met up with my family and Tim in Mammoth Lakes and had a delicious sandwich at a bakery, then strolled around a little. The town is in between ski season and summer recreation, so things were a little quiet. Ron & I descended for the next 45 minutes or so and the scenery changed before our eyes. Evidence of spring was everywhere, this cute lamb, trees are leafed out and the wind is blustery. Today was supposed to be something of a recovery day; even so, we rode 81 miles.

Dad found an oasis in this dry region of California...Keough Hot Springs. Griffin and I paid $14 and spent 2-1/2 hours in the pool and hot pool...refreshing! But Tim found the real deal a short distance away and it was free; smart guy. The place is kind of funky and a step back in time. If your ever in the neighborhood, check it out. This was the perfect finish to the day.
<img src='http://photos1.blogger.com/pbp.gif' alt='Posted by Picasa' style='border: 0px none ; Leaving Minden, Ron & I stumbled upon a fun run the community organized. It was great to see families and friends celebrating a run in memory of someone special. A girl of 4 or younger was running to the finish line and everyone was cheering her on. She was adorable, smiling and sweating as her mom hugged her when she completed the one-mile run and I teared up. It made me think of Christ greeting us at the finish line...now that's LOVE.

The day was perfect for cycling. It wasn't long and we entered California once again and admired Topaz Lake as we descended a twisty road. Tim had to buggywhip Ron for some reason...maybe he drank Tim's coffee. Right after one of our climbs, my cyclocomputer showed 1000 miles traveled...a milestone for both of us! There were three passes to conquer and the highest was Conway Summit @ 8138'. I obviously punished Ron with my speed, because he collapsed in the snow.

The mountains here are big and close. They are amazing to ride over, through and around. Just look at the sky. It was a hard day, but an epic one. This stage has been in the back of my mind as the toughest one...and I did it! 93 miles.

Worst Place to Ride-Carson City!

<img src='http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-41BekiaDI/AAAAAAAAAhI/oYtKcym4d-k/s400/P1000934.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-41Bz9ruQI/AAAAAAAAAhQ/QC7N9EeqhCE/s400/P1000953.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-41CAsYHhI/AAAAAAAAAhY/D0F1B9a7uMo/s400/P1000981.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-41CpZgC6I/AAAAAAAAAhg/MXQmZqHEpus/s400/P1000998.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />

I found out we camped in Nevada last night and you can actually throw a rock to California from our trailer, so that matter is settled. Ron & I rode the 18 miles to Reno to join Rich, Tim, Dad, Karen & Griffin at the National Auto Museum for a change of pace. Tim drove away too fast and left me stranded in the roaring 20's. If you are in the neighborhood, pay the measly $10. and visit this museum. It is very well done and if you bring a man over 70, he will tell you about Petey and his first Ford or Stinky McGoo and how he crashed this or that Dodge. I love the sense of nostalgia old cars can generate. And I just had to include this photo of a '53 Corvette and the toy version...my favorite Corvette model.

We ate lunch at In'N'Out Burger and parted ways with Rich. Dad dropped him off at the airport so now we are down to six in the trailer. Rich is quick to make friends and the guys miss him already. He rode an average of 54 miles a day at our pace...not too shabby for a recreational rider!

Ron & I continued migrating south and rode on an expressway, a county road and a freeway offramp where Ron exceeded 50mph and I had to settle for 46.6. This put us back on 395 through Carson City wherein we encountered the WORST riding of the trip. No bike lanes and cars passing you with that mashing the throttle in anger like, "I hate bicycle riders and they don't belong on any paved rode because I want to get to the next stoplight before they do". Then we see them at the stoplight and it's ALWAYS a guy in his 30's--50's who doesn't like what he sees in the mirror. Every time. This happened 5 times in Carson City and once in Minden. When some washed up guy almost hit me, Ron caught him, followed him into a gas station and gave him firm instructions on how to drive safely around cyclists. I reinforced it and we left. The idiot knew he was wrong and had no words of brilliance. Don't bother riding a road bike here..it sucks.

Oh yeah; we stopped at the state capital and were impressed.

Nevada? All day long, for 6 hours we were bucking a headwind. I don't know how he does it, but Ron stayed in the front 95% of the time today. He just has the legs for this kind of riding. He told me today we should thank GOD for having the desire to even attempt something like this. Given the choice of desire to win or a natural athlete, I would choose the potential athlete who has that innate desire to win every time. Ron has more determination than anyone I have ever ridden with; and if I actually cross the finish line, it will be because of him.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://cyclethewest2010.blogspot.com/2010/05/nevada-part-deux.html' title='Nevada? We found a spot to photo our symbolic midpoint @ 778 miles under a rugged ranch entrypoint as we looked ahead at snow-capped mountains we would be riding past throughout the day. It is the coolest thing to look down the road as far as you can see and chip away at it one pedal stroke at a time.

Past Standish, we saw the elusive Rastagoat. Right after taking this pic, he went into a shack and smoke escaped the roof...wonder what he was doing in there? In photo 3, pro teams were setting up for a race this weekend. Can you imagine racing a motorcycle on this hillside? That's gutty. Heading south on 395, I saw a cairn missing it's top, so I climbed up to finish the job right.

Tim has been great this trip. He has been suffering with a knee problem and hasn't ridden much the last 5 days, but he has a servants heart. He endures Griffin's unlimited shenanigans, takes awesome photos, helps tidy the trailer and keeps supplying the riders with proper food & hydration. He is sticking with us all the way to San Diego.

We finished the day in Bordertown, CA or NV, I don't know which. I never saw a sign welcoming us to this fine state, but google maps tells me you have made it to state number 4. It looks the same as what I have been riding through the last two days. You decide.

Too  Much Sagebrush

<img src='http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-txd0KM-yI/AAAAAAAAAe4/by_McQPm1Wo/s400/P1000831.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-txeXboL2I/AAAAAAAAAfA/RgLmt4O8-iU/s400/P1000864.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-txe_5cZtI/AAAAAAAAAfI/NJ4YYJYG2X0/s400/P1000834.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />

Finally we start the day with sunny skies. It must have been a balmy 50 degrees when we left Goose Lake campground. Our route today took us south on 395 all day long, which has been a winner...very scenic, remote and good pavement. To our left were snow dusted hills and to the right was the shallow Goose Lake. There were four riders making it to Alturas, our first break. Rich rode 53 miles, leaving Ron & I to finish the stage. We climbed to our highest point of the trip thus far and descended to meet the group at Madeline. I enjoyed the scenery for the first 30 miles, but after that I have seen too much sagebrush. Do NOT buy a vacation home here without seeing it.

Here is where things get interesting. At Madeline, it was decided to stay at Termo, about 14 miles away. Ron got a wild hair and cranked it up to 25, 27, 29, 30, 31, 32 and holding 33mph as I held his wheel. We had smooth roads, no traffic and a tailwind, so why not? You know, the last 14 miles of the day, let it rip! We got to Termo, a bona fide ghost town, slowed down and didn't see the trailer; so because we're guys we just continued to the next town 6 miles away. No trailer. Hmm. Let's call Dad. Oh, your'e in Termo? We'll ride back. Now we have a headwind and I was spent from the time trialing and I feel horrible. Made it though, but it might cost me tomorrow. Not too smart...because we're not even halfway. 99.5 miles and my shoulder is sore.

Riding the Tradewinds

<img src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-raVMYFpgI/AAAAAAAAAdo/HJDFx4cD9Ds/s400/IMG_5351.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;' />
<img src='http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-raVjWw8SI/AAAAAAAAAdw/OCZkt8hkipE/s400/IMG_5355.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;' />
<img src='http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-raV_TwIMI/AAAAAAAAAd4/_L22LqSE2lc/s400/P1000780.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;' />
<img src='http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-raWOGgaKI/AAAAAAAAAeA/4qZ0Pb7NWkM/s400/P1000819.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;' />

I had a difficult time paring the photos to four today (internet speed is slow so it takes a while to blog). There were enormous changes in the environment we saw in our 101 miles cycling today. For the day, I averaged an astounding 19 mph.

We woke to snow, 27 degrees and strong winds from the south...can't ride in that. By 10:00, conditions were evolving to our advantage. Ron & I rolled out at 11:00 with cloudy, but dry conditions, 45 degrees and a slight tailwind. Within one mile, the road turned a little left and we caught the tradewinds riding 22 effortless miles in under an hour. Rich & John joined us and the terrain changed from sagebrush to alkali lakes and soaring cliffs dusted with snow...it was spectacular to see. There is very little traffic and everybody passed with a wide berth...except a state trooper.

Then we transitioned to the Oregon Outback; grasslands and valleys. We spotted about 30 antelope feeding, a low flying red-tail hawk and John had two coyotes run in front of him. A cold climb brought us into to Lakeview, where John & Zach caught their ride home. I am really gonna miss my friends; afterall, they planned this event and it won't be the same without them.

I must admit, it is kind of fun to be 'irresponsible' and do something like this. I reccommend anyone reading this to quit wishing and pursue what you have dreamed about doing. It is very rewarding.

Weather Delay

<img src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-mRDV3FNaI/AAAAAAAAAcw/MnRpUICgs30/s400/P1000698.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-mRDqsCFHI/AAAAAAAAAc4/_2vgef3_8_0/s400/P1000702.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-mRDxghBxI/AAAAAAAAAdA/JwSqLJ4DPyg/s400/P1000704.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-mREHQwhnI/AAAAAAAAAdI/8Ty4T7ScfO4/s400/P1000708.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />

We woke to snow 200' above our present elevation and threatening clouds. The ground was soaked and winds were steady @ 18mph from the south...lousy conditions to commence our journey. Our stay last night in Riley(pop. 3) was fun, the proprietors, Dale & Pat Martin, were very friendly and we felt it wise to stay another night due to this present storm. By noon, the highway was dry and the sun even made a brief appearance, so that changed everything. John left by himself with Ron & I leaving maybe 20 minutes behind.

The road is undulating, but you can see straight for at least 10 miles where you are going. A light rain began to fall turning to M & M sized hail when Dad passed us. He slowed to see if we needed to turn back but I waved him on, grinning the whole time. Ron & I were dressed right for the occassion, but at home I would never ride under these circumstances. We finally arrived in Wagontire amassing a paltry 28 miles in two hours and the temp was 38. We never saw John; he had strong legs and an even stronger spirit and that's one of the many things I like about him.

We leaned our bikes up on the hitching post, made a fire and talked for a long time to Marty. He is really the ONLY resident of this town now. And he likes it that way.

I think we have another day of this bogus weather.

A Tough Day at the Office

<img src='http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-hbDeo1ZQI/AAAAAAAAAb4/bzspC32_fWQ/s400/P1000638.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-hbD6BMHMI/AAAAAAAAAcA/PF2JYJtVFDM/s400/P1000657.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-hbFqJ2CuI/AAAAAAAAAcI/0bktg0eaWcs/s400/P1000675.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-hbGHkdrDI/AAAAAAAAAcQ/B43yRfd5W1M/s400/P1000659.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />

Our day started without Tim, another casualty to injury (his knee). We rolled out in 40 degree calmness and quickly started a scenic climb of 2000' to the summit in the first photo. It is just beautiful country here! After a short descent, we rode on a plateau of grassland that just went on and on. At the break, John & Rich quit for the day leaving Ron & I to continue. We made it to Burns okay having to don rain jackets, but things got real tough after that.

The last 27 miles took a lot out of me, between wind & rain. If Ron had not pulled most of the way, I would have ended up like the coyote yesterday.

In camp, Dad cooked burgers and buffalo burgers for dinner...just excellent! Zach entertained us with his shooting skills...he has a lot of skills. What's next? Rich is the sharpshooter of the bunch, so don't mess with him. And Karen got to spend Mother's Day with 8 guys...but she never complains. 97 miles.

The Wrong Place at the Wrong Time

<img src='http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-Y-NS77cgI/AAAAAAAAAa4/YCduT4d4wr8/s400/P1000539.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-Y-N0QWCcI/AAAAAAAAAbA/Cg7GovqWIkk/s400/P1000550.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-Y-OOciyrI/AAAAAAAAAbI/qCeYWuWG1rk/s400/P1000587.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-Y-O-TbpzI/AAAAAAAAAbQ/jblXYgsq82g/s400/P1000609.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />

We got an earlier start today and enjoyed 26 miles of riding with maybe 8 cars on the highway. I can see why the Rickert's bring their tours here and I plan on coming back. The roads are smooth and meandering, the sights and sounds are soothing and the people are great. Around every bend is another pastoral scene...except for the coyote. He picked his last fence to jump through.

If you are in this neighborhood some day, you must stop at the John Day Visitor Center(Sheep Rock Unit). There is an interesting museum of fossils and geology...best of all it's free. Riding East from here on Highway 26 is another smooth lonely road with more rock that is closer to the roadway so when your going 21-22mph, it feels like you're ripping. Ron & I just had to let the horses run, so he cranked it up to 27mph and held it there for a couple of miles and we caught our group fast(his ankle is sore now though). How much more do I have to tell you that this is a great place to bicycle?

In the town of Mt. Vernon, I saw my Dad talking to Bubba. He is shirtless with overalls, his teeth look like they have been filed down, he's wearing a cap with a fish hook skewered in the bill, but he has a heart of gold. Bubba gave us the inside scoop on whats down the road and possible weather at the summit of a climb we had planned to tackle today. We made the decision to go to John Day and camp for the night at the Grant County Fairgrounds and rest up. Everybody was real hungry and we enjoyed dinner at Outpost Pizza (two thumbs way up). Ron set up some hammocks, Griffin led us on a wood gathering expedition and Zach entertained us with his fire making skills.

We only logged 64 miles today, but we have been in too much of a hurry. This is probably my only shot at this and I want to savor it.

Day 4 ending near Spray, OR

<img src='http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-Vy8OXMIDI/AAAAAAAAAaA/nRqO4NY5UFQ/s400/P1000447.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-Vy8jeME2I/AAAAAAAAAaI/K8qKzbhLHcM/s400/P1000458.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-Vy9OzwihI/AAAAAAAAAaQ/rKrF4y-M7xs/s400/P1000464.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-Vy9ktGvoI/AAAAAAAAAaY/AL3SIt71c1I/s400/P1000485.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />

It was the best of times; it was the worst of times...well, maybe that's a little overstated. But, Zach wasn't able to ride today. His Achille's tendon is too sore and swollen. He may join us again after healing, but he's not able to accomplish his goal.

We rode south from Hermiston ascending into expansive farming tracts. A cropduster 'waved' after flying by. Going through the town of Lexington(pop. 263) we were shocked to see a marked bicycle lane. Now, Gordon, can you contact Cory Crebbins about adding a bike lane on Crater Lake Ave.? Nine miles later, we descended into Heppner, a cool town, and saw a display of logging and farming equipment and that's where we met Herb Schmidt(79). He took our photo and I said, "I want to see that picture when I'm your age". And he said, "Oh, you're married?", and without missing a beat, I said, "Yep!" His buddy told Rich "He can't hear anything but he can understand ya".

Leaving Heppner we climbed to a town that was a ghost town more or less. The photo above is probably 10% of all the abandoned structures. Continuing south, we climbed through a beautiful narrow drainage to a summit @ 4612' and the air temp was high 30's...too cold! There was still snow on the ground. Tim is a strong 24 year old rider who stayed with me to the top...he could be a very good racer. We pointed downhill hitting 45.4mph and carved up some sweeping corners. I was thinking this is probably the best ride I've ever been on. In 25 miles we saw six vehicles on a perfect course, and one of them was ours. Near the bottom, the valley opens up to scenes of pastures, the John Day river and a lonely meandering road. And Russ & Rene Rickert tell us there is more to come! 98 miles for the day.

Dad set up his trailer behind a gravel mound used for sanding roads, which Griffin used for a slide. Ron gave a clinic on bicycle cleanup and maintenance. He also got a Cat. 5 tattoo (photo above).

After any auto race the winner thanks their sponsors and the time is appropriate for me to thank Cyclesport, the team I race for, TheProtectors.org and Landshark, for the sweetest bike.

Washington Is Behind Us

<img src='http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-Olp06WyfI/AAAAAAAAAZE/2vVKRMUrybI/s400/P1000351.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;' />
<img src='http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-OlqR5GnuI/AAAAAAAAAZM/uGCiqGlHGJQ/s400/P1000385.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;' />
<img src='http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-OlrCVd6bI/AAAAAAAAAZU/3MU21JBVKrA/s400/P1000398.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;' />
<img src='http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-OlroqdWbI/AAAAAAAAAZc/YfJmUOEh4CU/s400/P1000406.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;' />

We left Othello this morning under threatening skies and a slight headwind. Within 40 miles we were in sun and peeling off layers as we admired a cropduster flying 5 feet off the ground. After lunch, we followed the Columbia River on a smooth two lane highway that had a lot less traffic than this morning. The Gorge is just as scenic here as near Multnomah Falls with a set of train tracks 30 feet away.

When we pulled over at the 'Welcome to Oregon' sign, we all had a sense of accomplishment in what we had just achieved...crossing the state of Washington. I was really happy for John and Zach: father and son working together towards a common goal. I plan on Griffin & I doing something like this together someday.

Ron, first photo, is our coach and he works the hardest. He has the strongest legs, is looking out for us and calls out for traffic coming from behind. It was determined the first day of the ride if a large truck with a pilot car were oncoming and traffic coming from behind, we would just PARK on the side of the road. Well, that came in handy today when a windmill tower section was coming at us, a diesel train was roaring by and a truck coming up behind. Ron yelled 'PARK' a couple times and we did. That was kinda sketchy!

As we entered Hermiston, a trio of bison were startled by us cyclists. I was so hungry at the time and a buffalo burger made me salivate, but Ron's salsa and Dad's burritos took care of the matter handily.

Rich rented a hotel room tonight (his wife is coming to visit) and we all showered and sat in the jacuzzi...just what we needed to finish the day right. Oh Yeah...97 miles but Zach may not be able to continue. His achilles tendon is very sore. Say a prayer for him...I want him to finish the whole thing.

What a Day...

<img src='http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-JOPHlS7EI/AAAAAAAAAXw/HajAQpbC0L0/s400/P1000200.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-JOPf0kxyI/AAAAAAAAAX4/FZNlp6qrWko/s400/P1000221.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-JOPoa_5-I/AAAAAAAAAYA/XZ9ALB1iU20/s400/P1000277.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-JOQMqE26I/AAAAAAAAAYI/JN6g3jOZxHc/s400/P1000296.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />

Wow! What a day. We started in sun and a gentle tailwind up a 6 mile climb. It wasn't long until clouds gathered and at 25 miles in, we were riding in snow. Zach & Tim had on regular shorts and could have lost there legs to frostbite if we hadn't met our support vehicle at 32 miles. Most people would have called that good and waited for better weather, but not us! After warming up and changing clothing, we hit the road again and were quickly rewarded. The skies improved and the tailwind got stronger. At a viewpoint looking into a large canyon, we got a tip from some travelers to stop at Mom's European Deli in Soap Lake (that's really the name of the town), our next scheduled break.

What a sweet lady! Her name is Nadesha Koslov, she is from The Ukraine and has been in business for 3 years. These 6 smelly bikers walk in and immediately she gave each of us a sample of beef salami. It was excellent...and then we sampled some sweet bread. We were sold and bought swiss cheese while we were at it and that was lunch. This is no joke...best sandwich I've ever had. She brought pickles, beef & pork bologna and offered to make tea. She called a family member to come and entertain us as if we were long lost family. So hospitable...what a blessing she was. We dropped over $100. and she still gave us free cookies. If you are ever within 100 miles of Soap Lake, go find Mom and you won't be disappointed.

After lunch, we ripped down a lonely road at 24mph and going through Moses Lake, Ron spotted a Starbucks (this guy pees coffee) and we stopped for a quick break. From there, within 10 miles we had 4 flats. A nail had stabbed my tire and went clean through on one of them.

KOBI TV will air an interview tonight and the link is http://localnewscomesfirst.com/index.php?option=com_seyret&Itemid=431&task=videodirectlink&id=4847

Pulling into a Walmart parking lot in Othello, we could smell our dinner a block away. Dad had his trailer set up, with Rich's help, and our meal just about ready. Our mileage today was 112...What a Day!

It's For Real Now!

<img src='http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-D6PELO2TI/AAAAAAAAAWk/tzo5o2L9O5I/s400/P1000130.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-D6PoyChQI/AAAAAAAAAWs/V6Hmcy-Qe1M/s400/P1000152.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-D6Pl31YqI/AAAAAAAAAW0/nGIh41g9TE0/s400/P1000128.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S-D6QHcvz4I/AAAAAAAAAW8/NY48wqo7LuM/s400/P1000158.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />

The day began at 4:45. We ate breakfast, packed and rolled out by 6:15. Everyone admired the route we would later pedal from the comfort of Dad's truck. All six riders discussed a variety of details: Weather, climbs, equipment, food, breaks and more. By the time we reached the border, the anticipation of actually riding was maxed out. Look how jazzed everyone is....

The ride from the Canada border crossing to Bridgeport State Park was 82 miles. We went fast, too fast for a ride this long, averaging 17.5 mph. The temperature was 54 degrees at the start and we had a perfect tailwind. When we stopped for a snack at 44 miles, our average speed was 19 mph. The wind was the big factor today with it changing directions, even hitting us straight on, slowing us to 11 on the flats.

When we pulled up to our campsite, the trailer was set up and the spaghetti was almost ready to eat. After a long, hot shower, I felt great. All in all, everyone had a good start to this ride across the country.

A Mountain to Climb

<img src='http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S9-nlX1lotI/AAAAAAAAAVI/IT6vmEz1Ah4/s400/IMG_0490.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S9-nlyXSo1I/AAAAAAAAAVQ/C4m7H7rw36E/s400/IMG_0486.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />

I'm going to keep this one brief. We are in Yakima, WA in a non-descript RV park, but we just need a little sleep and drive another 5 hours tomorrow to the start.

This is one of my favorite places on the planet...Half Dome in Yosemite. All morning long I was ruminating over what I would say...they wanted five minutes for the Newsmakers segment, which is a long time for a half hour news broadcast. I was a bundle of nerves leading up to the conversation with the reporter, but once we began filming, things calmed down. He gave me some 'softball' questions, which made it easy to just converse and forget about the cameras. If you have ever seen one of these local yocals talk about how they grow flax and why they love to blend it in a smoothie, then they look around aimlessly...well now I know why they do that. There is a lot of cool stuff to look at! The sets, lights, cameras and green wall. The reporter was great; he kept the tone very positive and showed interest in what we were doing, as well as highlighting the problem of bullying in schools. The segment will air Tuesday or Wednesday @ 5:00 next week. I will post a link after it airs, because I'll likely be riding when it's broadcast.

Today I rode an hour with Zach, the young man who came up with this idea. He is always so calm and focused. Even with a minimal amount of training, he is determined to do this. By now, it is too late to cram for this test because it is only 3 days away.

My good friend, Rich, will be joining us to ride across Washington and perhaps beyond. Rich & I go way back and this is an adventure I'm thrilled we can share. Someday I want to stand on the top of Mt. Hood with him....

Fund Raising for The Protector's

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S9Es7TxiZ1I/AAAAAAAAAS4/4YsQjpKVK4I/s320/DSC_0616CTW2010.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5463197220409075538" />
One of my best friends, Paul Coughlin, travels around the country educating elementary to high school students about Bullying. He has developed a curriculum that educates kids about the power they have as a bystander. They alone, or preferably united with others, can say, "No...stop that...that's wrong!" and put the brakes on a bullies behavior.

The stories Paul shares are heartbreaking and they don't have to happen. By now, you have heard about teens committing suicide because they are mercilessly bullied, assaulted, demeaned and taunted...and grade school students bullied sexually. These poor kids are afraid to go to school to face another day, so much so that they feel living is not worth it. With cell phones, texting and Facebook or other social media, the harassment is 24/7. FBI statistics show 85% of school shooters were bullied. The problem is worse than you think.

I wanted this ride to be about more than achieving a personal goal. In a small way, we can bring awareness to this serious problem kids face. It's April and 40 degrees, so you dress for the weather and get going. This ride started with 11 riders and ended with 5; the tempo was medium fast for 65 miles @ an average speed of 19.5 mph. There were a few steady climbs, but nothing too hard and a ripping descent that turned into a race, more or less.

This is why I love cycling...look at the terrain over my shoulder. In Southern Oregon, it doesn't take long to be on a country road and most cars give you a wide berth. I like seeing snow-capped mountains and hearing the Rogue River from Lost Creek to Shady Cove. I like riding with fast guys who work hard and are willing to help each other. I like the smell of pine trees and the freedom the sport brings.

As of this post, THE RIDE is 3 weeks away. I sense the anticipation building from the other riders and myself for our journey. We're looking forward to riding new roads, accomplishing a huge goal, seeing sunsets, cementing stronger friendships and just disappearing for awhile. Sounds great to me!

Out Too Late

<img src='http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S7q-XcCiqPI/AAAAAAAAASA/vb3QaumYv5o/s400/IMG_3358.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />

When training for an event like this, sometimes you just have to go when a window of opportunity presents itself. Such was the case last night when it finally stopped raining and the radar showed a gap in the precip before sunset. I called Ron (watch for an intro in two weeks) to see if he could join me for 30 fast miles and within 20 minutes we connected about 5 miles from our homes to ride to Gold Hill and back. The problem was it was 45 degrees and 6:15 when I left the house, 6:30 when we met and it started getting dark at our turn around point, approximately 7:15. Ron was the strongman, so I just sucked his wheel most of the way back and we ascended Old Stage Rd. faster than I believe I ever have. By 7:40 Ron put on his neon yellow jacket, turned on a taillight and we separated to head home. I had no lights, a non-reflective jacket, black tights, the temperature was 38 and when I arrived home @ 8:05, I knew I used poor judgement. When I see other cyclists riding in the dark with no lights, I call 'em an idiot. I won't make that same mistake again.

In preparation for a 1500 mile ride, I've been pedaling 50-75 miles on Saturday's at a 18-21 mph pace and logging around 150 miles per week. I feel good, but not great. Part of the training for this is mental too and I must admit, I'm not sure if I can really do this. THE RIDE itself will demand 100 miles a day, for two and a half weeks...there's no way I can train close to that.

At least I am trying, because with the kind of weather we have had here lately, it would be easy to skip a ride in the cold rain and go to a coffee shop instead.

Home away from Home

<img src='http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S7AIiYx3mdI/AAAAAAAAAQw/4gB0HRUgyY0/s400/Mt+Hood+From+Toms+place+006_edited-1.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />
<img src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S7AIigRF0qI/AAAAAAAAAQ4/iO1s6IFRP3E/s400/IMG_5863.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:left; margin:0px 10px 10px 0;' />

I'd like to introduce you to the chauffer, butler and chef for Cycle The West 2010. Meet Allan Smith... my dad.

When I told him of my dream to ride across America, he volunteered to support me with his 5th wheel trailer, and at the time, this meant up to six weeks. Still, he is always up for one of my crazy adventures.... He's come along for hiking at Yosemite; rock climbing, bouldering and hiking at Smith Rocks; bouldering at Avenue of the Boulders; living history at Homestake, Montana (think Cascades near Bend) his childhood stomping grounds; the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit and much more. And the best part of it all is that my wife and son can come along for the whole journey.

My Dad is in every important mental snapshot of my life. As a single father, he did the best he could to raise my sister and I without ever complaining. As I think back on it, I gave him 1000's of reasons to pull his hair out, but he taught me the love of Christ and service to your fellow man. I remember him buying something for full retail, using it briefly and giving it to someone less fortunate for free. If you know me, that drives me bonkers, but to Dad, it brings him great joy to give. He continues living to serve others...it blesses others AND him.

The plan is for the five cyclists to roll out in the morning and an hour or two later, connect for a morning break for food, water, bathroom or clothing needs. Then he will drive ahead to set up that nights campsite at either an RV park, state park or a scenic spot on the route. If the weather doesn't cooperate, we'll have a rolling shelter to wait out the elements and he would be within 50 miles at any given time should a problem arise.

Now my dad and I see some things differnetly, but I am very fortunate to have a father who is devoted to me, my family and this goal. Without him, I wouldn't be doing this.

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Mt. Without him, no ride across the country.

In 5 days, he will have completed SEVEN YEARS of schooling to become a Pharmacist, just like his father, John. After completing his education, Zach wanted to ride across America from coast to coast. He bicycled across Washington two years ago, and since that was easy enough, why not the country? Since 6 weeks was too long, he and his father decided on the North to South route we continue to fine tune.

Zach loves the outdoors and a new adventure, as do I. Last spring, he, his younger brother & I summitted Mt. Shasta (14,162') on a perfect day. There was no doubt as to who the leader was...Zach had everything in control, had experience and we simply followed along. This was my second time reaching the top of this mountain and it will forever be a mental highlight.

Zach is one of the most focused, dedicated and determined young men I know. While riding 78 miles yesterday, he worked hard and bonked a little near the end. He never complained or made excuses, but did the hard work to get conditioned for this 1600 mile odyssey...and averaged 19 mph.

Way TOO Fast!!!!

<img src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S5NET7tpGLI/AAAAAAAAAO8/0R4NaL0YJrc/s400/IMG_3323.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;' />
<img src='http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4cIPNJCrmKs/S5NEUdgIgTI/AAAAAAAAAPE/UgjoZieyjtk/s400/IMG_3325.JPG' border='0' alt=''style='clear:both;float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;' />
Sometimes I feel like Forrest Gump...I have a friend who is an author and public speaker; another who is a State Senator and past Gubernatorial candidate; and today, another long-time friend drives up in a Lamborghini Gallardo. The exhaust note of this car coming up our street was music to my ears. I went for a ride and in seconds, the speedometer blipped 100mph before we slowed down (the Gallardo can surpass 200)! Brembo brakes provide serious stoppage and the low profile of the car grips corners better than any vehicle I've been in. The way my heartrate spiked, I must concede NASCAR drivers are athletes. The Italians know their art, don't they?

Well this is just way too fast! The kind of inspiration I am looking for is a steady 20mph for three weeks. When climbing hills, 7 or 8mph will have to do, but descending I am looking for 50-60, please. But, I must admit, getting mashed in the leather seat of a $200,000 exotic car feels great!

Olympic wrap-up

Today is the final day of the Vancouver Olympics and I'm still pretty jazzed about having been there. It was an amazing experience I will remember forever. I have always loved sports and admire the dedication, focus and inner drive the elite athlete possesses. Watching the U.S.-Canada hockey game today, you knew it wasn't about playing for a paycheck in the NHL. It was for a medal hanging on a ribbon...and none of them wanted to be the first loser and collect silver.

I rode 42 miles in 2 hours today. Now it was supposed to be a recovery day after yesterday's effort, but when I arrived at the start, I knew it would be work. Brad Earl, Richard Hogan and Mark DiTommaso are strong riders and they like pain...I just tolerate it. But, Brad reminded me, "That which doesn't kill us, makes us stronger". I think he really believes it....

A rider joined us the last 10 miles of the day. She is a pro bicycle racer in her 20's named Allie. Did you catch that? She's earning a living racing a bicycle! Training camp, then racing in Europe and the Tour de France Feminin. She has dreams and I would love to see her succeed, just as some of the Olympic athletes I got to see.

Now this is FAST!!!

       This is what I came to see! You just cannot appreciate the velocity these racers achieve until you are 8' away and they rip by @ 85mph. I have hit 56mph on my bicycle, which seemed fast at the time. But, imagine standing on I-5 and a motorcycle flies by you at 90mph a mere 3 steps away. The crowd at the Whistler Sliding Center all had the same expression the first time a competitor went by...quite simply, eyes wide open and saying WOW!!!!!

Most Olympic athletes have minimal fear and train years in obscurity for their chance at Olympic glory. If they win, they become national heroes and the purity of sport, dedication and sacrifice all becomes worth it in an instance. It is an amazing thing to see the unspoiled relief and shock they experience (think Simon Ammann, Switzerland, ski-jumping) as opposed to Kobe Bryant winning another title...and endorsements worth millions.

For years, I have wanted to attend the Games and vowed if close enough, I would go. This was an awesome experience and it motivates me for my quest in May. It needs to be for a cause bigger than me. Maybe not for national glory, but why not to benefit others less fortunate than myself?

Need for Speed

   Griff & I at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs

Our ride across the West will total approximately 1720 miles and the goal is to average 90 miles a day. That calculates to 19 days of riding...we have allowed 21 days total. Hey, this has an erie resemblance to the Tour De France which consists of 20 stages, 2200 miles and 2 rest days; now, admittedly the Tour is THE world's most difficult race, but as I watch this race every year, I have wondered what it would be like to do something similar on a much more tempered scale. I am determined to find out.

Now I have no illusions here...it will be the toughest thing I've ever done. There will be some days I will want to throw my bike in the garbage. Some days I will prefer another massage to riding in the rain & crosswinds for 6 hours, but there will be some days wherein I will try to find a way to pay my mortgage doing this, if possible.

I need some inspiration to help with my training! I know, how about the Olympics? I'm leaving Saturday and staying with a friend who I rode a Livestrong ride with. He's an avid cyclist and lives near Vancouver, BC. I'll check out Luge & Skeleton-that should fulfill my need for speed.

Canada to Mexico

               There will be four riders attempting this journey: John, Zach and a friend of Zach's who I have yet to meet. It has been decided we will ride from the Canadian border to Mexico east of the Cascades in Washington and Oregon; then likely riding east of the Sierras into Nevada and back into California ending in San Diego. The time commitment for a Pacific to Atlantic route was too much for all of us, so North to South it is! And that is still a legit ride across the country.

                     I hadn't said a word about my desire to ride across America when John dropped the idea last November. I told my wife, Karen, and without hesitating, she said, "let's do this". Immediately, I knew it was meant to be. Wow!...talk about support.

                     John is an amazing guy in his mid 50's who is certifiably hyperactive. We have ridden around Crater Lake and to the coast, ski and snowboarded at Bachelor and Ashland, kayaked in the San Juans, snowshoed, backpacked and more. He has unlimited energy and we share a love of books. As a father, he has traveled the road ahead of me and I ask him questions about raising kids frequently...I think of him as my big brother.

Ice skating at Running Y

  Griffin, 8 and I skating with classmates at the Running Y Resort this winter. Why?…Why not?, I say. I have wanted to do something like this for years. There are hundreds of excuses why I shouldn’t, and they are all quite practical. But in the end, I am the kind of person who hates the phrase, “I wish I would have done…”, fill in the blank. Why not live life to its fullest? Or as Jack London states it, “The proper function of a man is to live, not to exist”.

   Last May I followed Phil Keogan’s journey across America, riding from the Pacific to the Atlantic. Phil is the host of one of my favorite TV shows ‘Amazing Race’, and he has authored a book titled ‘N.O.W. No Opportunity Wasted’. After reading that, I decided to quit wishing and Just Do It!

   After a successful racing season (for me that is) last summer, I rode by myself from Portland to Cottage Grove, Oregon: Day 1 was 54 miles and Day 2 was 105. The route was flat, my average speed was just under 21 mph and I finished feeling great. In September, I jumped in with the Cycle Oregon event for three days and rode strong accumulating 204 miles; one of those days I passed hundreds of riders and finished first…I know, it’s not a race. But I began thinking I could actually do a long ride…maybe across the country?

  Why not?
